Whine or drone that rises with road speed
A high-pitched whine that climbs with vehicle speed — not engine RPM — is usually the CVT's belt, pulleys or bearings starting to wear. Some whine is normal on these units, but a whine that gets noticeably louder over months is the transmission telling you something. Worth having the fluid checked before anything else.
Slight shudder on light acceleration
A faint vibration or shiver around 30-60 km/h under light throttle, often on a slight grade, is the classic first sign of judder. It comes from the belt or torque converter clutch micro-slipping. At this stage a fluid service sometimes calms it down; ignored, it wears the belt and pulley faces fast.
RPM flare or hesitation pulling away
Engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate to match, or there is a rubber-band lag from a stop. Some of this is inherent to CVT behaviour, but a change from how the vehicle used to drive — especially flaring on takeoff — points to falling line pressure or early belt slip.
Delayed engagement when cold
A pause of a second or two before the vehicle moves after shifting into Drive or Reverse on a cold Edmonton morning suggests the pump is struggling to build pressure with worn seals or degraded fluid. Cold thickens CVT fluid, so winter exposes weakness that summer hides.
Judder like driving over rumble strips
When the shudder becomes a pronounced bucking or vibration under normal acceleration — owners often describe it as driving over rumble strips — the belt is slipping against the pulleys hard enough to matter. On 2013 and newer models this often sets code P17F1. At this point the clock is running.
Dark or burnt-smelling CVT fluid
Healthy NS-2 or NS-3 fluid is green-ish to light amber. Fluid that is dark brown, smells burnt, or shows glitter (fine metal) in the pan means the belt and pulleys are shedding material. Once there is significant metal in the fluid, a drain-and-fill will not save the unit — the debris has already been through everything.
Check engine light with CVT codes
Codes such as P17F1 (judder detected), P0746 (pressure control solenoid performance) or P0868 (secondary pressure low) are stored by the transmission computer when it detects slip or pressure loss. These are worth scanning for at the first sign of trouble — the difference between a P17F1 and a P17F0 can be the difference between a valve body and a whole transmission.
Losing power on the highway — overheat limp mode
The vehicle suddenly will not hold highway speed, especially on a long grade or a hot day, then behaves normally after cooling down. That is the CVT's fluid-temperature protection cutting power to save itself. It is a built-in safety, but if it is triggering on ordinary summer driving, the transmission is overheating because it is worn, low on cooling capacity, or running degraded fluid. Do not keep pushing through it.
Grinding, metallic rattle, or no drive at all
A grinding or metallic clatter under acceleration, banging into gear, or the engine revving with no forward motion means internal hardware — belt, chain or bearings — has let go. Code P17F0 usually accompanies severe belt damage. At this stage the transmission is done; the only questions left are replacement options and whether the vehicle is worth it.

What actually goes wrong
A CVT has no gears. Instead, a steel belt (or on the V6 models, a chain) runs between two cone-shaped pulleys that squeeze it under enormous hydraulic pressure — several times the pressure inside a regular automatic. Changing the pulley widths changes the ratio smoothly, which is why a healthy CVT feels seamless. But the whole design lives or dies on one thing: the fluid's ability to keep that belt gripping the pulleys without actually slipping. The moment clamping pressure drops or the fluid loses its friction properties, the belt slips, and every slip event scuffs hardened steel against hardened steel. Unlike a regular automatic, which can limp along with a worn clutch pack for years, a CVT that starts slipping destroys itself quickly — the metal debris circulates through the pump, valve body and solenoids and takes them down too.
The first wave of failures started with the 2003 Murano, the first mainstream North American vehicle to get Nissan's Xtronic CVT, and spread as the CVT rolled out across the 2007-2010 Versa, Sentra, Altima, Maxima and 2008-2010 Rogue. These early units whined, shuddered and quit — often before 150,000 km. The problem got bad enough that in late 2009 Nissan Canada doubled the CVT warranty on all 2003-2010 CVT-equipped models, from 5 years/100,000 km to 10 years/200,000 km, and reimbursed owners who had already paid for failed units. That was a genuinely good program, but it expired years ago — the newest vehicle it covered aged out around 2020. Any first-wave Nissan still on the road today is entirely on its own dime.
The second wave came with the redesigned Jatco units introduced around 2012-2013 — smaller, lighter, built for fuel economy, and in the case of the Sentra and Versa, running a tiny CVT with an auxiliary gearbox behind engines that work it hard. The 2013-2016 Altima, 2013-2017 Sentra, 2012-2017 Versa, 2014-2018 Rogue and 2013-2014 Pathfinder generated enough failures to spawn a string of class actions. In the United States, settlements extended transmission warranties to 84 months/84,000 miles across most of those models. In Canada (excluding Quebec, which had its own proceeding), a settlement approved in 2022 covered the 2014-2018 Rogue, 2015-2018 Pathfinder and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60, extending coverage to 7 years/140,000 km and reimbursing prior repairs. Notice the fine print: the seven years run from each vehicle's in-service date, not its model year — vehicles put in service in 2018 aged out by late 2025, and even late-registered 2018 leftovers run out during 2026. For practical purposes the extension is finished, but if your 2018 was first sold new in 2019, check your in-service date before writing it off.
The failure chain itself almost always runs through heat. CVT fluid does double duty — it is both the hydraulic muscle that clamps the pulleys and the specialized friction interface that lets the belt grip. Heat breaks down its friction additives and thins it out; degraded fluid grips worse; worse grip means micro-slip; micro-slip makes more heat and sheds metal. The transmission computer watches fluid temperature, and when it climbs past its threshold — a long grade on a hot day, towing, or just a worn unit working too hard — it cuts engine power to protect the transmission. That is the infamous limp mode: the car that suddenly cannot hold 110 km/h on a summer highway run, then drives fine after a rest stop. On 2013-and-newer models the computer also actively watches for belt slip and stores judder codes: P17F1 means slip was detected and the unit may respond to fluid and a valve body; P17F0 means the slip was severe enough that the belt is almost certainly damaged, and in our experience that code nearly always ends in a replacement transmission.
What made all of this worse is that these transmissions were widely treated as sealed-for-life. Nissan's maintenance schedules for many years called only for inspection under normal driving, and plenty of owners were told the fluid never needs changing. That advice is wrong for this design. The fluid is the wear item — and Alberta driving hits it from both ends: bitterly cold starts that leave the fluid thick and the pump starved for the first few kilometres, and hot summer highway pulls that push temperatures toward the protection threshold. A neglected unit that finally gets a fluid change at 180,000 km sometimes acts up afterward, which fuels the myth that changing the fluid kills CVTs. The truth is the opposite: the fresh fluid did not cause the failure, it just removed the varnish and friction-worn fluid that a dying unit was barely surviving on. Regular fluid changes from early in the vehicle's life are the single cheapest thing that extends these transmissions.
Worth knowing where Nissan itself landed on all this: the 2022 Pathfinder redesign dropped the CVT for a conventional 9-speed automatic, and the all-new 2025 Murano did the same. The Rogue, Sentra, Versa and Kicks still use CVTs, with revised designs that so far generate fewer complaints. For anyone owning one of the 2003-2020 vehicles covered in this guide, though, the practical reality is unchanged: the design tolerates neglect poorly, failures are common enough that used replacement supply and pricing are well established, and the earlier you act on symptoms, the more options you have.

Valve body or solenoid replacement

When pressure-control codes point to the valve body rather than the belt, a replacement valve body plus fluid can rescue a unit that is otherwise healthy. Typically only worth it when the fluid shows little metal and there is no P17F0. Makes sense on a newer vehicle you plan to keep for years, where the extra cost over a genuine OEM unit buys updated parts and a longer warranty. Availability and pricing vary a fair bit by model.
New CVT from a Nissan dealer, installed

A new or Nissan-reman transmission at dealer labour rates. On most of the affected vehicles this quote exceeds what the vehicle is worth, which is exactly why so many owners walk away from otherwise good cars. Get this quote if you want, but get a genuine OEM quote beside it before deciding anything.
Repair it, or replace it?
Start with the codes, not the quote. A P17F1 judder code with clean-ish fluid may respond to a fluid service or valve body; a P17F0, metal in the pan, or no-drive means internal hardware damage and no amount of fluid or solenoids will fix it. Knowing which situation you are in is a one-hour diagnosis, and it changes the answer by thousands of dollars.
Genuine rebuilds of these CVTs are rare. The belt-and-pulley set is the wear item, replacement pulleys are precision-matched parts, and very few shops rebuild them economically. In practice your real choices are: fluid/valve body to buy time, a genuine OEM unit, a remanufactured unit, or a new one from Nissan.
Run the value math honestly. A 2015 Rogue with 160,000 km is worth maybe $9,000-$12,000 in decent shape. A $7,000 dealer transmission makes no sense; a $3,000-$4,000 genuine OEM install keeps a known vehicle on the road rather than replacing it with a similar used vehicle — which, if it is another Nissan CVT, carries the same risk you just paid for.
Under roughly 200,000 km with a solid body, good engine and no rust-through, replacing the transmission is usually rational in Alberta — our dry climate keeps bodies alive long past the point the CVT quits. Past 250,000 km, or with other big-ticket items looming, put the repair money toward the next vehicle instead.
If the transmission has already been replaced once and the replacement failed early, look at what killed it before installing a third. Nine times out of ten it is debris from the original failure left in the cooler and lines, or an overheating problem that was never addressed. Any replacement we install gets a cooler flush or new cooler — skipping that step is how a good genuine OEM transmission dies in 20,000 km.
A vehicle in overheat limp mode can usually still be driven gently to a shop after cooling down, but do not keep commuting on it for weeks. Every overheat event and every judder episode grinds more metal off the belt and pulleys, and can turn a valve-body-money problem into a whole-transmission problem.

- Change the CVT fluid every 50,000-60,000 km with the correct Nissan-spec fluid (NS-2 for most pre-2013 units, NS-3 for most 2013 and newer). Alberta winters and summer highway runs both count as severe service. This is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it is cheap compared to any repair.
- Never let anyone put generic ATF or a 'universal' CVT fluid in it. The friction properties of the Nissan-spec fluid are the whole ball game; the wrong fluid can cause the very belt slip you are trying to prevent.
- In winter, drive gently for the first few kilometres. Cold CVT fluid is thick, pressures are unstable, and hard acceleration before the fluid warms up is exactly when these units slip.
- Do not tow at or beyond the rating, and if you regularly haul or run long summer highway trips loaded, keep the transmission cooler and its lines in good shape — heat is what kills these units.
- Take early shudder seriously. Mild judder caught at the fluid-service stage is recoverable; six months of ignoring it usually is not.
- Have transmission codes scanned at every service. Judder codes and pressure codes often store long before the check engine light comes on, and P17F1 caught early is a very different bill than P17F0 caught late.
- Avoid habits that make the belt slip: pinning the throttle from a standstill, rocking hard between D and R when stuck in snow (short gentle rocks are fine), and holding the vehicle on a hill with the accelerator instead of the brake.
Frequently asked questions
Which Nissan years have the worst CVT problems?
Two clusters. The first wave covers roughly 2003-2010: the 2003-2010 Murano, 2007-2010 Versa, Sentra, Altima and Maxima, and 2008-2010 Rogue — bad enough that Nissan Canada doubled the CVT warranty on all of them. The second wave covers roughly 2012-2018: the 2013-2016 Altima, 2013-2017 Sentra, 2012-2017 Versa and Versa Note, 2014-2018 Rogue and 2013-2014 Pathfinder are the years that generated the class actions. Labour alone usually runs $1,200-$2,000 because the subframe has to come down on most of these vehicles. Always price the genuine OEM option before deciding the car is a write-off.
Can a Nissan CVT be repaired or rebuilt instead of replaced?
Sometimes, but only in a narrow window. If the problem is a valve body or solenoid and the belt has not been slipping badly — typically a P17F1 with reasonably clean fluid — a valve body replacement at $1,000-$2,200 can work. Once the belt and pulleys are scored (P17F0, metal in the fluid, grinding), rebuilding is rarely economical because almost nobody rebuilds the belt-and-pulley set. At that point a used, remanufactured or new unit is the realistic path.
Will changing the fluid fix my shudder, or can it make things worse?
For early, mild shudder, a drain-and-fill with proper Nissan-spec fluid genuinely helps and sometimes clears it entirely. For an advanced slip problem, it will not save the unit — and this is where the 'fluid change killed my CVT' stories come from. The change did not cause the failure; the transmission was already dying, and it happened to quit soon after. Our honest rule: fluid service is prevention and early intervention. If your fluid is full of metal, spend the money on the replacement instead.
What do the P17F0 and P17F1 codes mean?
They are Nissan's judder-detection codes — the transmission computer telling you it measured belt slip. P17F1 means slip was detected at a level that may respond to fresh fluid or a valve body. P17F0 means severe slip; in practice it almost always means the belt is already damaged and the transmission needs replacement. These are hard codes tied to the transmission computer's calibration data, so clearing them with a scanner does not make the underlying problem go away.
Why does my Nissan lose power on the highway in summer?
That is the CVT's overheat protection — limp mode. The computer watches fluid temperature, and when it climbs too high on a long grade, a hot day, or under load, it cuts engine power to protect the transmission, then restores it after things cool. Occasional limp mode while towing up a mountain pass is the system working as designed. That makes three things non-negotiable — a lower-kilometre donor with verified kms, the exact matching application for your model year, and a parts warranty from the supplier. Installed with a proper cooler flush and fresh fluid, a good genuine OEM unit routinely outlasts what the repair decision requires. Bought blind off an online listing with no history, it is a coin flip.
How long do Nissan CVTs last, and should I buy a used Nissan that has one?
It varies enormously with maintenance and use. Neglected units from the problem years can fail before 150,000 km; well-maintained ones with regular fluid changes commonly go 250,000 km or more. If you are shopping used, ask for CVT fluid service records, scan for stored judder codes, and test drive it cold — listen for whine and feel for shudder at light throttle around 30-60 km/h. A problem-year Nissan priced right with a documented fluid history, or one that has already had a quality replacement transmission, can still be a sensible buy. One with no records and a shudder is not — unless the price already reflects a transmission.
