The short answer
If the temperature gauge is in the red or a coolant warning is on: pull over, shut the engine off, and do not open the rad cap — hot cooling systems are under pressure and can scald. Overheating is the one problem where continuing to drive routinely turns a hose-sized bill into an engine-sized one. Most causes are simple — low coolant from a leak, a stuck thermostat, a dead fan — but modern aluminum engines tolerate very little of it, so the tow is nearly always cheaper than the gamble.

The gauge reads higher than its usual spot
Most drivers know exactly where their needle normally sits. Creeping past that spot on the highway, on hills, or while towing is the earliest warning — the cooling system has lost margin, from low coolant, a lazy thermostat, or a radiator that is partly blocked. Needing regular top-ups, smelling coolant after parking, or finding crusty white or coloured residue around hoses, the radiator, or the water pump means a leak is active. Small leaks are cheap; the overheat they eventually cause is not. Note that a low coolant level can also hide a head gasket problem consuming it internally — worth ruling out early.
It runs hot in stop-and-go traffic but cools at speed
A classic electric-fan signature: at highway speed, airflow through the rad is free; at idle in a drive-thru or on Whitemud stop-and-go, the fan has to make it. If the needle climbs when you stop moving and drops when you get rolling, suspect the fan, its relay, or its temperature switch — or a radiator too plugged (bugs, mud, winter grit between the rad and A/C condenser) to work at low airflow.
Temperature spikes shortly after cold start, then it boils over
A thermostat stuck closed traps coolant in the engine, and the temperature rises fast and keeps going. Our winters are hard on thermostats and we replace plenty of them in both failure directions — stuck open (engine never warms, heater lukewarm, often a P0128 code) and stuck closed (overheats). Stuck closed is the dangerous one: do not keep driving in the hope it sorts itself out.
Gauge in the red, coolant warning light, or steam from under the hood
Pull over safely and shut the engine off — now, not at the next exit. Steam means coolant is boiling out; the system is no longer cooling anything. Do not open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir while hot: the system is under pressure and the contents can scald. Let it cool, then make the call — and for anything more than a confirmed simple top-up-and-limp, that call should be for a tow.
White sweet-smelling exhaust smoke, milky oil, or bubbling in the reservoir
These are head gasket signatures: coolant burning in the cylinders, coolant and oil mixing, or combustion gas pumping into the cooling system. Often they follow an overheat that was driven through. Stop driving the vehicle — continuing to run a suspected head gasket failure spreads the damage into the bottom end. Proper testing (a pressure test and a block test) confirms it before anyone quotes you thousands.
What actually goes wrong
Ranked by what we actually find: number one is simply low coolant from a leak — hoses, radiator end tanks, water pumps, heater cores, or a corroded fitting. Repair it, or replace it?
Drive it, or tow it? A needle sitting slightly high but stable, with no leaks visible and coolant level correct: drive gently and directly to a shop, monitoring the gauge, with the heater on full to shed heat if it climbs. A gauge that hits the red, a coolant warning, or any steam: shut it down where it is safe and tow it — this is the clearest tow-it case in all of car ownership, because minutes of hot running do damage that hours in a shop cannot always undo. After a boil-over, topping up and continuing on is a gamble with a warped head as the stake. The tow is nearly always the cheapest option on the table.

- Glance at the temperature gauge the way you glance at the fuel gauge — the drivers who catch overheating cheap are simply the ones who noticed the needle a minute earlier.
- Have the coolant's strength, condition, and level checked every fall — freeze protection matters at -40, and old coolant corrodes the system from the inside. Top-ups should use the coolant type your engine specifies, not whatever is on the shelf.
- Fix small leaks when they are small. A hose seep or a crusty fitting found at an oil-change inspection is a minor line item; the same leak finishing the job on Anthony Henday in July is not.
