The check engine light shares the dash with lights that mean stop now. A red oil pressure light or a temperature gauge in the red alongside the check engine light is not a diagnose-it-this-week situation — shut the engine off and tow it. Minutes of driving on no oil pressure or a serious overheat can turn a sensor-sized bill into an engine-sized one.
What actually goes wrong
The check engine light is the on-board diagnostics system reporting that something it monitors drifted out of range. A note on clearing codes: disconnecting the battery or clearing the light without fixing the cause just resets the monitors. If the fault is real, the light comes back — and in the meantime the vehicle's emissions monitors read not-ready, which matters if the vehicle is being inspected or sold. Worse, clearing codes erases the freeze-frame data that would have made the diagnosis faster and cheaper.
