The engine turns over, but slower than it did in October — rrr... rrr... instead of a quick spin. A battery loses a large share of its cranking power at -30 while the engine demands more of it, because the oil has thickened. A slow crank at -25 on a battery that cranked fine at plus 5 is the classic warning that the battery is on its last winter. A load test now costs a fraction of a tow later.

You have needed a boost more than once in the last month

One dead battery after leaving a light on is bad luck. Two or more boosts means something is actually wrong: a battery that no longer holds charge, a charging system that is not refilling it, or a parasitic draw pulling it down overnight. Repeated boosting is also hard on the alternator — it is a charging device, not a battery charger. Get the battery load tested and the charging output measured before the pattern strands you somewhere worse than your driveway.

Plugging in the block heater makes no difference

If the engine cranks the same whether or not it spent the night plugged in, the block heater or its cord is likely dead — and nobody notices until the first -35 morning when the car needs it. Cracked cords and melted plug ends are the most common failures we find. Have the heater and cord tested each fall; it is a quick check.

The starter solenoid is trying to engage but there is not enough current to spin the motor. The battery is frozen solid or visibly bulged — do not boost it

A small minority of no-starts turn out to be mechanical — an engine that seized or jumped timing. Repair it, or replace it?

Boost or tow? If the battery is not frozen or bulged and the car starts with a boost, drive it straight to the shop — do not shut it off on the way, and do not call the boost a repair, because it tells you nothing about why the battery was flat. If it cranks strong but will not catch, boosting is pointless; that car needs diagnosis where it sits or a tow. If the battery light came on while driving and the car stalled, tow it — chaining boosts onto a dead charging system just strands you again a few blocks later. And never boost a frozen battery.

The cheap-versus-serious line on no-starts is unusually kind: most of the time the fix is a battery, a cable end, or a block heater cord — hundreds, not thousands. It gets expensive in two ways. The first is parts-lottery spending: a battery, then a starter, then an alternator, replacing everything except the corroded ground that was the actual problem. Testing first is how you avoid that. How to make yours last longer

Try short attempts with rests between them, and if it clearly is not catching, stop and have it diagnosed. A strong crank with no start is a fuel, spark, or immobilizer problem, and none of those improve with more cranking.

Should I tow it or can it wait in the driveway?

A car that starts with a boost can be driven straight to the shop. A car that cranks but will not fire, or does nothing at all after the battery checks out, needs a tow — and if it died with a bang, a clatter, or a low oil pressure light, tow it without question and do not keep cranking. Sitting outside for a few days in deep cold will not hurt a modern vehicle, but a deeply discharged battery left in it can freeze, so do not leave a dead one sitting for weeks.
