Pull the dipstick after the engine has sat overnight and give it a sniff. Healthy oil smells like oil. If it smells distinctly of gasoline, fuel is making its way past the piston rings into the crankcase. This is the earliest and most reliable sign of dilution, and it typically shows up in the coldest months.
Oil level rising above the full mark

What actually goes wrong
The 1.5L turbo in these Hondas is a direct-injection engine, meaning fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder at high pressure rather than into the intake. When the engine is cold — and in an Edmonton winter it is very cold — some of that fuel does not vaporize and burn. It clings to the cold cylinder walls as liquid gasoline. Each pass of the piston, the rings scrape a little of it down into the crankcase, where it mixes with the engine oil. Every direct-injection engine does this to some degree; the Honda 1.5T just did it more than most, partly because it runs extra rich on cold starts and takes a long time to build heat.
In warm climates, or on longer drives, this mostly self-corrects. Once the oil gets properly hot, the gasoline evaporates back out and is drawn through the crankcase ventilation system and burned. The problem is that a short winter commute — ten or fifteen minutes across town at -25°C — never gets the oil hot enough for that to happen. The fuel goes in and never comes back out. Trip after trip, it accumulates. That is why owners saw the oil level climbing above the full mark and why the dipstick smelled like a jerry can. Gasoline is a solvent, not a lubricant: diluted oil is thinner, its protective film is weaker, and the parts it is supposed to protect — piston rings, crankshaft bearings, the camshaft, the turbo's bearing — all wear faster.
Honda acknowledged the problem and, notably, addressed Canada first because our winters made it worse here. Starting in November 2018, Honda Canada rolled out a free product update for 2017–2018 CR-Vs and 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5T, beginning in the coldest parts of the country. The update reprogrammed the fuel injection and transmission control software so the engine warms up faster and spends less time running rich, updated or replaced the climate control unit on some vehicles to improve cabin heat, and included a fresh oil change. Honda Canada also extended warranty coverage on the affected engine components to six years from the original purchase date with no kilometre limit. It is worth being clear about what this was not: there was never a safety recall for oil dilution, in Canada or the U.S. It was a service campaign.
A Canadian class action followed anyway, and it settled in the Ontario Superior Court, with final approval in March 2021. The settlement confirmed the six-year unlimited-kilometre warranty extension and reimbursed owners for documented towing, diagnostic charges up to $325, and extra oil changes caused by dilution. Those claim deadlines are long past, and here is the practical point for anyone reading this in 2026: six years from the original purchase of a 2016–2018 vehicle has now elapsed. The extended coverage has expired for essentially every affected car. If your 1.5T dilutes its oil today, managing it is on you.
Did the fix work? Partly. The software update genuinely reduces how long the engine runs cold and rich, and owners generally reported better heater performance and slower oil-level creep afterward. But software cannot change the physics of spraying gasoline into a cold cylinder. Vehicles that live on short winter trips can still accumulate fuel in the oil, just more slowly. Later model years got the improved calibration from the factory, yet complaints continued at a lower rate — enough that a U.S. class action filed in October 2022 alleged the problem persisted in 2019–2023 CR-Vs, 2019–2022 Civics, and 2018–2022 Accords. That case involves allegations, not proven findings, but it tells you owner reports did not stop in 2018.
The good news, from a shop's perspective: the overwhelming majority of these engines survive just fine. The 1.5T is otherwise a solid, efficient engine, and dilution is a manageable maintenance problem, not a ticking time bomb. The engines that come to grief are almost always the ones that spent years doing five-kilometre winter trips on stretched oil change intervals, with nobody ever pulling the dipstick. Fuel-thinned oil does its damage slowly and invisibly — worn rings that start consuming oil, tired bearings that eventually knock. Catch it early, change the oil often, and the engine will likely outlast the rest of the vehicle.

Repair it, or replace it?
If your engine runs well and the only symptom is mild fuel smell or slight oil-level creep over the winter: this is maintenance, not a repair. Tighten your oil change interval, confirm the Honda software update was applied, and keep driving. There is no reason to preemptively replace anything on a healthy 1.5T.
If dilution is confirmed but there is no engine damage: an immediate oil change plus habit changes (longer drives, block heater, shorter intervals) solves the problem for a few hundred dollars a year. CR-Vs and Civics hold their value well in Alberta, so the math usually favours the swap over scrapping the vehicle.
If the vehicle is high-kilometre (300,000 km+) with rust, suspension, and other wear stacking up: get an honest whole-vehicle assessment before committing to any engine work. Sometimes the right answer is to put a $4,000 genuine OEM engine into a $12,000 vehicle; sometimes it is to sell it as-is and move on. A straight shop will walk you through both numbers.
One thing not worth paying for: engine 'flushes' or additives marketed as dilution cures. Fuel in the oil is removed by changing the oil. Nothing you pour in the crankcase changes how fuel gets there.

- Confirm the product update was done. Any Honda dealer can check your VIN for outstanding campaigns free of charge. If a previous owner never brought the vehicle in, the software update may still be available — it makes a real difference to warm-up time and cold-start fuelling.
- Shorten your oil change interval in winter. Do not stretch to whatever the Maintenance Minder allows — on a short-trip 1.5T in Edmonton, every 5,000–6,000 km or at minimum twice over the winter is cheap protection.
